are not solid pieces of wood. The beautiful finish grain that you love is a veneer over other lumber. These veneers are sometimes as thin as 1/64th of an inch. Deep scratches, gouges and wear can cut through the veneer all the way down to the base wood, making that area impossible to refinish.
